Overview
The MSc in Internet Software Systems is a one year Masters degree for students who have found their undergraduate study stimulating and want to learn the advanced techniques in a current growth area of software.
The explosive growth of the Internet over the last decade has witnessed the rise of web software applications delivered to remote users located throughout the world. The emergence of these applications revolutionizes the way information is gathered, processed and delivered inside organisations as well as across organisations. It is a key enabling technology for globalisation, whereby large corporations distributed throughout the world are able to function as coherent units, and electronic commerce, whereby services are delivered to customers and client businesses in a direct and timely fashion.
The Masters in Internet Software Systems covers the theory and practice of constructing software applications that operate on the Internet. It gives a firm grounding in networks, distributed systems, computer security and databases, as well as practical experience with technologies and tool kits for building Internet-based software. You will learn techniques for delivering software applications over the world-wide web and for connecting component-based software using distributed objects and web services. You will learn and build software applications using the currently dominant technologies such as Enterprise Java and .NET.
Most students graduating from this programme move into software and IT industry to work on software development. They are also employed in large corporations for building IT solutions. A small number of graduates will also be able to move on to PhD research, either at Birmingham or elsewhere in the UK and abroad, to shape the technologies that will be developed in future.
International graduates of this programme are eligible to work in the UK for 12 months under the Government’s International Graduates Scheme.
Our minimum entry requirement is a Second Class degree or an international equivalent in Computing or a closely related discipline. The entrants must have a solid foundation in programming and knowledge of data structures and algorithms. In particular, knowledge of object-oriented programming will be a strong asset. Students who have not studied in English must pass a recognised English test.
International Student Master’s Scholarships
A £3,000 scholarship will be awarded to a number of privately funded, full fee paying, international Master’s students.
